There are many ways that we talk about learning, education, and schooling, but we often fail to address the underlying assumptions that justify our schooling and education practices. In many places around the world, dominant education (and, thus, schooling) traditions assume that human beings (and our exploits) possess the ability for perpetual growth and independence. Indeed, many traditions assume the perpetuity of humanity itself.
If our existence has taught us anything, however, it is that human beings are not eternal, infinite, or independent. In fact, we are quite the opposite: limited in action and life span, and quite dependent on this planet on which we find ourselves. While this understanding should shift much of our dominant practices in general, I explore how this understanding should affect education.
